Applications now accepted for Extension Master Gardener program

If you enjoy gardening and working with others and sharing your growing passion then the Johnson County K-State Research and Extension Master Gardener program may be just the opportunity for you.  Applications are now being accepted for the 2014 Extension Master Gardener (EMG) training program.

EMG volunteers get involved in a variety of projects including maintaining demonstration gardens, staffing a gardening hotline and giving presentations through the speakers’ bureau. Youth programs are also another avenue for volunteer participation. Continue reading

Brownback has signed 18 bills

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback signed 11 bills into law Tuesday, bringing the total number of bills signed by the governor during the 2013 Legislative Session to 18.

  • HB 2007 establishes the Insurance Holding Company Act and amends the Insurance Code to modify existing provisions governing insurance holding companies.
  • HB 2030 authorizes the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism to issue up to ten wounded warrior deer permits each calendar year to disabled veterans who sustained injuries in combat and have a service-connected disability of not less than 30% through a random drawing if the number of eligible individuals exceeds ten. Olathe-Google Fiber deal official

Ever since Google announced plans to bring ultra-high-speed internet services to the metro area, Olathe residents have eagerly anticipated its availability in Olathe.  The wait is over.

On Tuesday night, March 19, the City Council unanimously voted to approve an agreement with Google to deploy Google Fiber, an ultra-high-speed, fiber-to-the-home network.

“We are excited to work in partnership with Google to bring this next-generation fiber optic system to Olathe homes, schools and businesses,” said Mayor Michael Copeland.  Continue reading

Storm Debris Collection Service

Debris from recent winter storms will be collected by the City at no charge through next week.  Residents are required to schedule curbside bulk pickup service at least one day before their regular scheduled solid waste collection day.  Call 971-9311 or visit Citizen Connect.

Storm debris that is cut and securely tied into bundles weighing less than 50 pounds each will also be collected at the curb through Yard Waste service on the regular scheduled collection day. Continue reading
