Olathe news briefs for the week of Feb. 1

City Council

The Olathe City Council will meet Tuesday, Feb. 2, at 7 p.m. in the Council Chamber at City Hall for a regular session. 2016 Summer Camp registration now open
Registration is now open for Two Trails and Black Bob Summer Camps offered through Olathe Parks & Recreation. Campers ages 5*-12 will swim, enjoy weekly field trips, play games, and more.  *Five-year-olds must have completed kindergarten.

• Register for camp by the week. You choose the week(s) that fit your needs.

• Registration includes a 50% fee to reserve your spot.  The remaining fee is due two weeks before camp starts.
• Register early; space is limited to 60 campers each week, per location.

Meadow Lane Trail public meeting Wednesday, Feb. 3
The City of Olathe will hold a final public meeting to discuss the Meadow Lane Trail at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 3 at Meadow Lane Elementary, 21880 College Blvd. The meeting will allow residents to provide input on the layout and design of Meadow Lane Trail.  The trail will run from Stratton Oaks subdivision to Ridgeview Rd., connecting with the Johnson County Gary Haller Trail.

Teddy Bear Tea Sunday, Feb. 7
Dress in your best and bring your favorite doll or stuffed animal to enjoy tea, refreshments, and activities at the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Teddy Bear Tea on Sunday, Feb. 7 with sessions from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Each session is limited to 125 participants.  All activities will be held inside the Heritage Center, 1200 Kansas City Rd. Spots still remain for Mahaffie 150^th Gala

Celebrate 150 years at the Mahaffie House on Saturday, Feb. 20 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a special 150^th Gala sponsored by the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Foundation. Enjoy 19th Century cuisine, fireworks and social dancing. Tickets are $75/person, $600 for a table of eight, and sponsorships are available. Ticket sales are limited to the first 150 registrants. Enjoy these upcoming events at the Olathe Public Library:

• Tuesday Tunes with Betse Ellis on Tuesday, Feb. 2 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Olathe Downtown Library, 201 E. Park St.  Ellis, a founding member of The Wilders, is a vocalist who plays fiddle, and tenor guitar. She enjoys old-time music, fiddle tunes, folk, blues, and bluegrass.  She also performs with banjoist Clarke Wyatt as Betse & Clarke. Bring your instruments, a tune, or just come and enjoy the music.  Registration is not required.
• The President as “Consoler-in-Chief” on Tuesday, Feb. 3 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Olathe Indian Creek Library, 12990 S. Black Bob Rd.  One of the roles of the American president is serving as “consoler-in-chief” following a national tragedy or disaster. Join Harold Ivan Smith, grief specialist from St Luke’s Hospital, as he examines the lives of the presidents in this role. Register on the library events page or by calling 913-971-6888.
• Black Lives Matter on Feb. 3 from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Olathe Indian Creek Library, 12990 S. Black Bob Rd.  One Struggle KC, a community organization committed to fighting for human rights and dignity, will discuss the Black Lives Matter movement.  Registration is not required.
• Who is Frode? on Friday, Feb. 5 from 11 a.m. to noon at the Olathe Downtown Library, 201 E. Park St. Children ages 4 – 11 can get to know the imaginary Frode, invented by author Carie Beth Russell’s daughter, and hear about his mischievous antics and adventures from the original story.  Preschoolers must be accompanied by an adult.  Registration is not required.
• Community Volunteer Fair on Friday, Feb. 5 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Olathe Indian Creek Library, 12990 S. Black Bob Rd. Visit with various local organizations to find volunteer opportunities. Registration is not required.
• R.E.A.D. to a Dog on Saturday, Feb. 6 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Olathe Indian Creek Library, 12990 S. Black Bob Rd. Read to a therapy-trained dog from Pets for Life, Inc. Upon arrival, stop by children’s services and sign-up for a reading time.
• Afterschool LEGO^® Club on Wednesday, Feb. 10 from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., at the Olathe Indian Creek Library, 12990 S. Black Bob Rd.  Kids in grades K – 5 can be part of the monthly themed LEGO^® Club!  A small snack will be served.  Register on the library events page or by calling 913-971-6874.
• Pizza & Pages Book Lovers Club on Thursday, Feb. 11 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Olathe Downtown Library, 201 E. Park St. Kids in grades 3-5 will share a quick pizza dinner, talk about books they have read or are reading, and enjoy a surprise reading-related activity together.  Participants are invited to bring a copy of a recently read book and share about it.
