Olathe’s Got Talent set for April 11

The annual Olathe’s Got Talent event will showcase this area’s young talent in the areas of music (vocal and instrumental), dance, and variety (comedy, magic, etc.). Performers from age seven through their senior year in high school will have the chance to compete for scholarships during this year’s event.

Olathe’s Got Talent 2015 will be held from 7-9:30 p.m. Saturday, April 11, in the Bell Cultural Events Center, 2030 E. College Way, Olathe. The event is organized by the Olathe Noon Optimist Club. Olathe Ford/Lincoln is the presenting sponsor for this event.

Vanya Shivashankar Wins “Child Genius 2014” Television Show

Vanya Shivashankar won last night’s “Child Genius 2014” television show on Lifetime.

She competed against 19 others and was named “Child Genius” which includes a $100,000 college scholarship.

Olathe East High School Band to Perform At Kauffman Center

The Olathe East High School Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 12th at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts – Helzberg Hall (1601 Broadway Boulevard). Tickets are $15 and children under 12 are free.

Presidential Scholars candidates

Several Olathe School District students have been named as candidates for the United States Presidential Scholars Program.

The students are Erica Chang and Saurabh Harohalli, Olathe East High School; Greg Bixler, David Nelson and Marisha Madhira, Olathe North High School; Ashwanth Samuel, Olathe Northwest High School; and Zizhao Chen, Olathe South High School.

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by Executive Order of the President to recognize and honor some of the nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors. Annually, up to 141 students are chosen among outstanding graduating seniors to become U.S. Presidential Scholars, one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students.

Police urge teens to buckle up

From Feb. 23 through March 6, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office will join other Kansas Law Enforcement to stop what has been an epidemic for the past several years. In 2014, 34 teens lost their lives due to car crashes in Kansas; 63 percent of those teens were not properly restrained.

In an effort to changet his trend, law enforcement across Kansas will be extra-vigilant when patrolling around schools. For more than 30 years, deputies have educated and warned passengers and drivers regarding the importance of using restraints while in their vehicle.

There should be no surprises when it comes to this enforcement effort. Deputies will issue citations to any individual who refuses to obey the traffic laws, whether it is for speeding, texting or failing to buckle up.

City Council

The Olathe City Council will next meet Tuesday, March 3, at 7 p.m. in the Council Chamber at City Hall for a regular session. Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Begins 150^th Anniversary Celebration

The Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm has played an important role in the history of Olathe since 1858. This year, Mahaffie is commemorating that role with a year-long celebration of the “sesquicentennial” birthday of its centerpiece: the 150-year-old limestone farmhouse.

“The Mahaffie farmhouse is truly one of Olathe’s historical treasures, and we’re excited to celebrate its milestone with the community,” said Tim Talbott, Mahaffie’s site manager.
