Fireworks in Olathe illegal; city fireworks display at Great Mall July 4

Fireworks caused 197 reported fireworks-related injuries in Kansas in 2012, according to the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Some sparklers, a holiday favorite, may burn at temperatures of up to 1800º Fahrenheit, which is as hot as volcano lava.

County names transit facility after late mayor

Ceremony set July 1 at E. Allen Roth Transit Center in Mission

The newly-opened Mission Transit Center has a new name. It will be renamed on July 1 in the honor of the former Westwood Hills Mayor E. Allen Roth, 77, who died May 6 and who was a longtime member of the Johnson County Transportation Council.

On Thursday, June 27, the Johnson County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution to dedicate the Transit Center, 5251 Johnson Drive, Mission, after Roth. The facility opened on June 3.

An accomplished architect, Roth was mayor of Westwood Hills for 14 years, successfully running six times for re-election. He was chairman of Johnson and Wyandotte Counties Council of Mayors, and was active in the Northeast Mayors Council and the Johnson County Charter Commission.  He served as a member of the Total Transportation Council at the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) and Johnson County Transportation Council. Man, 24, hit by vehicle

A 24-year-old man was hit by a vehicle just before 8 a.m. Friday at the intersection of Kansas Avenue and Spruce Street in Olathe.

According to the Olathe Police report, the man, who Olathe Police have not identified, was hit by a vehicle attempting to make a left turn at the intersection.

The man remained in serious condition at a local hospital.

The driver of the vehicle was not injured.
