Johnson County’s Fun Fest feeds a growing need for food

Feed the Need campaign helps to stock shelves at local food pantries

With the goal of stocking 164 tons of food in Johnson County food pantries, County employees will launch their annual Feed the Need campaign with a kickoff event scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, on the County Square in downtown Olathe.

The event, open to the public, will serve as a donation drop-off site as well as offering games, drawings for prizes, food booths, and a dunk tank. Feed the Need is the County’s annual food drive and is supported by its 3,800-plus employees.

The campaign goal has been set at 164 tons of food in either cash or food donations. Each donated dollar is roughly equivalent to four pounds of food. Continue reading

Olathe accidental shooting not life threatening

At approximately 10:15 p.m. on June 6, Olathe Police officers were dispatched to a reported accidental shooting inside a residence in the 1400 block of E. 124th St.

When officers arrived they found an adult female who had suffered a single gunshot wound that was not life threatening. The adult female was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was later released.

Several other subjects were inside the residence at the time of the shooting.  The investigation is active.

Healthy Menu kickoff at Theatre in the Park June 7

The Johnson County Park and Recreation District and the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment/Access to Healthy Foods Coalition are teaming up to offer and promote healthy food options at The Theatre in The Park concessions this summer. 

 Today, June 7th marks the kick-off of not only the 2013 season of The Theatre in the Park (7710 Renner Road, Shawnee, KS 66217) with the production of “Children of Eden”, but also the start of a new, healthier menu of nearly all fresh or baked food choices at the venue. “SCORE!”, the name of the healthy concessions initiative is designed to help patrons make educated food choices by having menu boards that include calorie counts and portion controlled options.  The first 1,500 people through The Theatre in the Park gates today will receive a delicious, healthy apple! Hannes Zacharias, County Manager will be offering opening remarks at this kick-off event. Gates open at 6:30p.m., the show begins at 8:30p.m.
